Class 1A State Track: Brynn Smith and Elise Olson

Brynn Smith and Elise Olson exchange the baton in the 4x400-meter prelim. They qualified third and finished second on Saturday leading AGWSR to third in the Class 1A team race. Smith also medaled in the 400 and the 4x800.

Nobody outside of the community felt the AGWSR Cougar girls could contend for a Class 1A title when the 2023 State Track and Field Championships opened on Thursday. While they may not have won, they held a two-day lead and put the school without a track of their own on the map.

The Cougars finished third behind five medals won over nine different events. All while practicing on the streets and the little-more-than dirt track in Ackley.

Class 1A State Track: Tori Metzgar

Tori Metzgar ran a leg of the 4x800 that finished 20th on Thursday. She was also part of the second-place 4x800 on Friday, helping the AGWSR Cougar girls finish third in Class 1A.

Class 1A State Track: Karis Lippert and Piper Smith

Karis Lippert get the stick from Piper Smith in Friday's Class 1A 4x400-meter prelim. They qualified for Saturday's final and finished second to help AGWSR grab third as a team.

Class 1A State Track: Abby Veld and Nakia Ollivierre

Abby Veld threw to fourth in Thursday's Class 1A State shot put while Nakia Ollivierre was running to to fourth in the 3000-meter run. Their points helped lead the AGWSR Cougars to a third-place team finish. Ollivierre, who also qualified in the 800 and 1500-meter runs on Saturday, did not run.

Class 1A State Track: Ava Olson

Ava Olson cleared the opening height on her first attempt, and finished 14th in Class 1A.

Class 1A State Track: Aiden Heitland

Aiden Heitland finished 19th in the Class 1A State discus and 11th in the shot put.

Class 1A State Track: Bradly Roder

Bradly Roder finished 23rd in the Class 1A 110-meter high hurdles. He was eighth in his heat which saw a state record fall.
