The AGWSR Cougars were left dumbfounded in the wake of a 76-39 Class 1A Region 2 finals loss as Newell-Fonda celebrates it’s 18th berth into the State Tournament.
AGWSR head coach Mike Finger was justifiably concerned heading into Thursday’s Class 1A Region 2 final in Fort Dodge. Those concerns were realized early as his 12th-ranked Cougars (23-2) struggled with a defense – the likes of which they haven’t seen before – in a 76-39 loss to the second-rated Newell-Fonda Mustangs (22-2).
“They have a potent press – for sure the best press in 1A and maybe a couple other classes,” Finger said. “They turn you over and not only that, their transition to offense is amazingly fast. Our ability to break that press was, without a doubt, my biggest concern and it showed up right away.”
