An event this summer will raise money for an Alden woman’s fight against cancer.

Twenty-nine-year-old Amber Barrick was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a cancer of the blood. In Barrick’s case, her body produces few blood cells needed to function and overproduces cancerous cells in the bloodstream.

Although Barrick is in remission now, Mayo Clinic has determined she has a 65 percent chance of relapse within two years. At that time her cancer will most likely mutate becoming immune to chemotherapies that are available now and have been effective. There is no guarantee new chemotherapies will be available at that time to combat a more aggressive disease. Barrick must undergo a stem cell transplant in order to beat the cancer entirely. Her 24-year-old brother is a match.

Barrick is waiting to find out when she’ll relocate to Rochester, Minn. to begin treatment and transplant. She’s required to live in the Rochester city limits for three to six months while undergoing treatment and transplant. As a result, the family has the added expense of the transplant and a secondary residence.

A Cornhole Tournament (double elimination bracket) benefit is planned for Saturday, June 27 with proceeds aiding the family in covering additioal costs.

The event will be at the Iowa Falls Rugby Field (2301 Georgetown Rd., Iowa Falls) with gates and check-in starting at 9 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 12 p.m. and the first toss at 1 p.m.

Cost is $50 cash/team. A team consists of two players of any gender, and the minimum age is 14 years old. All children must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Individuals can only register with one team.

There will be awards for first place ($200 cash/team or $100 cash/player); second place ($100 cash/team or $50 cash/player); third place ($50 cash/team or $25 cash/player). Awards will be announced at the end of the tournament.
