The Hardin County Historical Society will be hosting “The Cemetery Whisperer,” aka Bob Terry of Liscomb, Iowa, for a presentation of his work in the cemeteries around the state and also out of state. This will be held on Sunday, June 16, at the Eldora Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.
Parking will be available at the west end of the Fairgrounds, right next to the north part of the cemetery where we will be gathering to hear his talk and participate in a hands-on event. Please bring your own lawn chair. Water will be provided. In case of poor weather, the presentation will be given at the Historical House at 1601 S. Washington St. Please call 641-939-5137 with any questions.
Since the 1970's Terry has repaired and restored headstones locally and throughout the United States. He enlarged his efforts to include cemetery mapping for both commercial and private entities. With the aid of L-shaped dowsing or divining rods, he detects unmarked graves. He has been featured in several publications and TV shows. He is eager to share his insights into this rare field.
In the past, the Eldora Cemetery had a very dedicated caretaker - Howard Fry, and he knew that some people had mixed emotions about a cemetery, but he knew there's something intriguing as well. A brief history of the cemetery according to Fry will be also be given.
