McKenzie Burton

Iowa Falls Police dispatcher McKenzie Burton takes a call at her desk in front of a bank of computer monitors inside the station. Burton currently supervises three other full-time dispatchers, but the department recently got permission from the Iowa Falls City Council to add a fifth dispatcher to give Burton more time to review previous 911 medical calls, as required by a company the department contacts with for emergency medical dispatching services.

Iowa Falls Police Chief Wade Harken is putting department needs ahead of wants with his next hire.

Earlier this year, during planning for the 2020-21 city budget, Harken requested and received approval for funding to hire an 11th police officer. It’s been 13 years since the department had 11 officers, and in that time call volumes have increased. An 11th officer would make scheduling easier, and would decrease overtime, as well as pay for part-time officers to cover shifts.
