Eldora Council Cindy Johns

Eldora City Council Member Cindy Johns (left) discusses banning fireworks in Eldora on June 23 while fellow member Melody Hoy looks on.

The Eldora City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday night to approve the first of three readings of an ordinance that would ban the use of consumer-grade fireworks inside city limits. But because the council did not vote to suspend rule that requires three readings and approvals, the ordinance isn't likely to be adopted into City Code before the Fourth of July holiday week.

Council members Mel Hoy, Cindy Johns and Greg Priske all voted in favor of a measure that would ban fireworks in Eldora, but ordinance amendment rules require at least four council votes to waive any subsequent readings - something members Aaron Budweg and Blake Jones prevented with their votes against suspension of the rules.
