The Robert W. Barlow Memorial Library in Iowa Falls

Iowa Falls Mayor Gene Newgaard used his veto powers for the first time this week, nullifying city council action last week that hired a contractor to replace the Barlow Memorial Library’s roof.

At a meeting on July 20, the Iowa Falls City Council voted 4-0 (council member Bruce Thies was absent) to accept a bid from White Hawk Roofing and Construction of Omaha to replace the library’s roof for $132,500. For years, library staff have battled a leaky roof, hiring companies to patch it and inspect it, and occasionally covering shelves of books in plastic sheeting to protect them from water damage.
