Rita Schoeneman

Rita Schoeneman puts in hundreds of hours planting, weeding and fertilizing the Donation Garden at Iowa Falls’ community gardens. Last year, the Master Gardener grew, harvested and donated more than 600 pounds of produce to area food pantries.

It’s early March and there are still a couple of inches of snow inside the 1,600-square-foot enclosure atop soil that will be teeming with vegetables of all types by summertime, and Rita Schoeneman can’t wait to get started.

Schoeneman, who founded the community garden at Sunnyside Park in 2017 with grant money from ISU Extension & Outreach, is a Master Gardener and has set up the fenced-in Donation Garden to grow produce exclusively for food pantries. Last year more than 600 pounds was donated.
