Volunteers from Hardin County and beyond pitched in to help clean up the town in the days and weeks after the August 2009 hail storm.

It was a Sunday morning. The storm came out of nowhere.

Her home a couple of miles west of Eldora, Deb Crosser said it hit her house first. They weren’t sure what it was, but the house sustained damage.

Vehicles were dented and windows were smashed by hailstones and falling limbs during the Aug. 9, 2009 hail storm that hit Eldora and the surrounding area.

Cleanup of the aftermath of the Aug. 9, 2009 hail storm began almost immediately, and lasted for the following days, weeks and months.

Hail Storm Recovery

The Aug. 9, 2009 hail storm that hit Eldora damaged every building in the town - and many in the surrounding area. Recovery took months and, in some cases, years. Today, the downtown has undergone a streetscape, new trees have been planted, and many of the houses and businesses have new windows, siding and roofs. For some people, that recovery is the storm's silver lining.
