Before the Aug. 9, 2009 hail storm, dozens of decades-old trees stood on the courthouse square. The storm damaged most of them, and the county decided to remove all of them to start with new landscaping.

Silence. When Jody Mesch recalls the Aug. 9, 2009, hail storm that ripped through Eldora, it’s not images of debris-filled streets, broken windows, or downed power lines that come to mind. It’s the quiet of the immediate aftermath that’s stuck with him for 10 years.

For Mesch, who’s been Hardin County’s property manager for 24 years, those are memories best forgotten.

More than 100 Hardin County courthouse windows were broken out in the Aug. 9, 2009 hail storm. Employees and volunteers worked quickly to board up the windows.
