River Road Hillside

The site of a State of Iowa communications tower along River Road in Iowa Falls has been the source of strife for more than a year after the hill was stripped of dozens of mature trees during construction. During heavy rain events, gravel, mud and debris wash down the hill and cover River Road, and then city employees clear the road to make it passable. Minor erosion controls that were put in place by contractor Motorola Solutions Inc., a year ago have washed out and not been replaced.

A bureau chief with the Iowa Department of Public Safety said Thursday that state officials are pushing to get a dispute between the City of Iowa Falls and Motorola Solutions Inc., resolved, and work on a communications tower complete as soon as possible.

Lt. Tom Lampe, chief of the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Communications Bureau, said the state is anxious to erect a fence around the tower in Iowa Falls, but the condition of the hillside leading up to the site from River Road doesn’t allow for even a work truck to make the trip.
