Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Bradley) Hadwiger was born on Nov. 27, 1950, to Emmett James and Elizabeth (Donaldson) Bradley in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Betty lived on a farm near Bradgate, Iowa, and was the oldest of six children. When she was 16 the family moved to Rutland, Iowa. Betty attended school at Bradgate, Twin Rivers, St. John’s Gilmore City, Pocahontas Catholic School and Humboldt. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1969. Betty met Dale Hadwiger while attending Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. They were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt in 1971.
Dale and Betty farmed near Iowa Falls and raised four children. Betty was a busy farm wife and mother, as well as working as a police dispatcher, EMT and ambulance driver. She also returned to college to earn her RN and worked as a nurse at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital and served as director of the Freedom House in Iowa Falls. Betty also worked as a Calhoun County Public Health Nurse. She retired in 2016 from Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. Many of her years working as a nurse were spent with those affected by mental illness and continued advocating for them after retirement.
Betty enjoyed many activities in her spare time, including photography, painting, sewing, knitting and crafts of all kinds, gifting most of what she made to family and friends. She also enjoyed camping, fishing and attending the Iowa State Fair. Most of all, Betty enjoyed family time, and treasured her time spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Betty battled breast cancer in 2004 and 2005 and was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2016.
