If any part of your childhood was spent in Iowa Falls in the last 50 years, chances are good that the Scenic City Kiwanis touched your life. The service club, which was founded in 1966, will dissolve at the end of this month, ending a 53-year tradition of giving back to area kids.

There are quite a few service clubs in Hardin County, so it can be difficult to keep them straight. The Iowa Falls Kiwanis Club began as an offshoot of the Eldora Kiwanis. Kiwanis International’s mission is to improve the lives of children. Years ago, the local Kiwanis made money through the sale of popcorn, a food stand and monthly fish fry meals. The money they collected was given back to the community in the form of pinewood derby trophies, sponsorship of local T-ball teams and other donations.
