The focus this week – beyond the turkey and the football games – is gratitude. Thanksgiving is upon us, and ’tis the season for counting our blessings. We at the Times Citizen are no different. We like to use this late fall/early winter season to reflect on where we were last year, what we’ve experienced in the last 12 months, and who’s to thank for our good fortune. Here are just a few of the things (and people) we’re thankful for.

Post-pandemic life (kind of). This time last year, most of us were feeling a lot more isolated than we are now. Hardin County and the rest of Iowa were experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases that sickened hundreds of local residents, disrupted our children’s education, filled our hospitals, and kept many of us home – removed from the traditions and the people we love. This year, COVID-19 is still here – our county is classified as being an area of high transmission – but thanks to the vaccines that are freely available and the knowledge that’s come with battling this virus for almost two years, we’re able to gather in ways that were just a dream last year.
