If you were in Eldora or paying attention to the news coming out of the county seat last week, you know that the town was hot with controversy over a city council decision about the hiring of a police chief.
Anthony Schrad was appointed to the position of interim chief amid former Chief Mike Ludwigs’ medical leave in 2020. This spring, Mayor Dave Dunn announced that he had appointed Schrad to be the permanent chief. But that decision didn’t sit well with three city council members. Greg Priske, Mel Hoy and Cindy Johns voted against a raise that would have paid Schrad a chief’s salary, and they refused to confirm Dunn’s appointment of Schrad. It’s not clear exactly what inspired the council members’ votes, but Hoy and Johns made reference to issues that they said concerned them, but which legal counsel had advised them to keep private.
