Rep. Pat Grassley, whose Iowa House District 50 includes the northern half of Hardin County, will be the next Speaker of the House at the Capitol in Des Moines. The New Hartford farmer was elected to the leadership role by his Republican colleagues last week.

This is a big step for Grassley, who is the grandson of U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley. In an interview with the Times Citizen last week, Pat Grassley — who has spent the last four years chairing the House Appropriations Committee — said of his new position, “I’ve always said being appropriations chair, you have the ability to influence things that are good for your district . . . I would say [speaker] is similar to that, just on a larger level. Being able to influence the agenda of the caucus.”
