When you list them out, there are quite a few dangerous professions. Police, fire and ambulance professionals put themselves in harm’s way all the time. Cab drivers and convenience store employees are often targeted. And teachers have spent years practicing drills to fend off intruders. After last Thursday, we can add another profession to the list.

The shooting at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Md. wasn’t new in its awfulness. At least once a month there’s a new tragedy that shocks us and prompts a fresh round of political arguments.
