One win. That's all AGWSR needed in order to get through the first half of the North Iowa Cedar League-West with an unblemished mark. An improved Grundy Center Spartan team stood in the way, however, but it didn't take long to decide things as the Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead on their way to a 10-0 win.
The Spartans had yet to play BCLUW, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, and AGWSR but stood at 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. AGWSR, ranked eighth in Class 1A, came to Grundy Center with an 11-3 record that included a perfect 5-0 mark in the loop.
Taryan Barrick continues to lead the state in strikeouts, fanning another 17 in the win. She walked just two, and gave up a pair of hits. Rachel Sicard led the Cougars at the plate, belting her fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning.
The Cougars did all they would need to do in the first inning as MaKenna Kuper led off with a walk. She stole second, ahead of a walk to Barrick. A passed ball moved Kuper and courtesy runner Haley Bakker ahead, and a sacrifice fly by Sicard plated the first run of three runs. Taylor Sperfslage scored the second with a double, before scoring herself on a Josie Winterberg single.
AGWSR added five more in the third on three walks and four singles, and another in the fourth on Sicard's blast, but couldn't end it early. They reached 10 with a tally in the seventh on a Kuper single and a Barrick double.
