The year in sports

2019 in Greenbelt area sports conjured up plenty of emotions. The best player to wear an Iowa Falls basketball uniform was honored with a jersey retirement by the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder. Several area athletes and teams made their mark in state competition, and others came up just a bit short of their state tournament goals. Coaches reached milestones, and a few said goodbye. Sports are unpredictable, but that's why one of the reasons we follow them.

In March of this year, the Oklahoma City Thunder retired Iowa Falls native Nick Collison's jersey. His jersey retirement is the first for the organization.

Scott Patton

Iowa Falls-Alden Head Wrestling Coach Scott Patton (center) recorded his 100th coaching win at Thursday's triangular in Fort Dodge. He is 101-83 during his eight seasons at the helm. The Cadets won both duals, defeating St. Edmond 78-0 and Alta-Aurelia 44-36.

IFA Girls basketball

The Iowa Falls-Alden girls basketball team were upset in the Class 3A Regional Final, denying their first trip to the state tournament since 1996.

Iowa Falls-Alden played Clear Lake in the final game of the season for a chance at a Class 2A District 3 title. They lost the game, and lost a chance at the postseason in the span of a few hours.

Ali Gerbracht

AGWSR's Ali Gerbracht won the first-ever Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Girls State Tournament and was named the first Dan Gable Ms. Wrestler Award.

Russ Banzhaf

AGWSR long-time head coach Russ Banzhaf called it a career after the 2018-19 season. He finished his 33 year career with 423 victories.

IFA girls 4x800 champions

The Iowa Falls-Alden girls 4x800 recorded their second State championship in two years.
